Brixham Heritage Database

This page shows the names and amounts of the BRIXHAM LAY SUBSIDY of 1332. Selected surviving records from the early medieval period have been transcribed by our members for inclusion in our members' library. This is a tax record, resulting from a parliamentary grant to the crown of a fifteenth of the assessed value of rural tithings and villages - including Brixham parish - and a tenth of the assessed value of town boroughs and ancient royal property. Movable wealth worth less than 10 shillings was exempt in rural areas (less than 6 shillings in urban areas). Riding horses, tools, household goods, and food was exempt, but domestic animals and crops were assessed.
