News, appeals and thanks

Chris Potts's book on the Museum's 50 years is available now! It is wonderful that the Museum is still thriving after so many ups and downs and threats to its future. Chris's research highlights the amount of time and effort put in by volunteers over the last 50 years to ensure that the Museum survived and will continue to go from strength to strength with your support. Orders via the Museum office on the usual number & e-mail. £5 +p&p.

A celebratory buffet lunch was held this summer to show the Museum's appreciation to its many volunteers. The 50th birthday cake was cut by Tom Horsley and his sister, whose father, John Horsley, was a co-founder of the Museum.

The junior art competition overall winner, showing "On Holiday in Brixham in 1958" was Tabatha Cart of Eden Park Primary School. The painting of a Brixham Trawler by infants was won by Layla Sullivan-Ladd from Brixham Church of England School.

A quiz all about Brixham was arranged and there were 7 winners. First prize went to 11 year old Sasha Miller. One of the runners-up was Frank Mock, whose father was a sergeant here when the building was still a Police Station.

Thanks to all the sponsors who made these events possible for our anniversary year.

The archaeology day on Berry Head was held in conjunction with Torquay Museum's Young Archaeologists, with sponsorship from the Community Partnership. These events give the children (and their parents!) a chance to experience the excavating, washing and identifying of artefacts, and to discover a little of how people lived long ago.

Our Boot Camp was held in conjunction with Torquay Library Services, over 3 days at 3 venues. A DVD was made with a group of 24 6-11 year olds, showing how life might have been like in the Napoleonic era, up on Berry Head. Dressed in military costumes of the time, they were drilled and marched by regular soldiers on leave, while others prepared a lunch of bread and cheese, baked potatoes and beans. They made a dough which they fried like Welsh cakes to make pudding. There were mock battles and first aid for the "wounded". Thanks to our team, and the help from the Berry Head Rangers and Friends of Brixham Library.

Patsy Britten was interviewed by Philip Jay and Pam Worth for Gulf Radio, extolling the virtues of the Museum, and the broadcast was heard in Qatar.
